The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources says that as of Sunday evening 42 forest fires were burning in the northeast region of the province, with 19 of them described as out of control. The Parry Sound 33 fire at just over 113 square kilometres remains the most dangerous of the wildfires. After raging for almost three weeks, it still hasn’t been brought under control.Hot, dry, windy weather this weekend helped fan the flames, however, despite the challenging conditions the ministry says crews made excellent progress in ringing most of the fire’s perimeter with hose lines.Today’s forecast calls for more heat and gusty winds, but with higher humidity and the possibility of 10-to-15 millimetres of patchy rain.Last week, the Municipality of Killarney issued an evacuation order because of heavy smoke from the fires, while the Municipality of French River issued an evacuation alert.
FREDERICTON — More than 100 faculty members at the University of New Brunswick have signed a letter denouncing one of their colleagues for promoting what they say are racist arguments about immigration.Ricardo Duchesne, a professor in the department of social science at the university’s Saint John campus since 1995, is no stranger to complaints about his controversial views, but now the university has decided to investigate. The letter says Duchesne’s arguments about multiculturalism and immigration are “racist and without academic merit.”But Duchesne says he’s just doing his job as an academic and asking tough questions. The Canadian Historical Association has also written a letter condemning Duchesne’s views.UNB President, Eddy Campbell, issued a statement to say the university is reviewing the allegations concerning one of its faculty members and will take the time necessary to complete the review. While Campbell’s statement doesn’t name the professor, Duchesne says he expects to have a meeting soon with university administration but has no intention to resign. The Canadian Press
OTTAWA — Some of the federal government’s top bureaucrats have been warned that China and India might try to use their respective migrant communities in Canada to advance their own interests. The stark warning is in a secret report prepared for deputy ministers attending a retreat on national security last year that also flagged the challenge in preventing foreign countries from launching “hostile actions” against Canada.Such actions include cyber-attacks, spreading of misinformation and using diaspora communities, either directly or indirectly, to steal technology, influence elections and target the Canadian economy and infrastructure.Obtained by The Canadian Press through the access-to-information law, the report’s release comes as the Liberals and Conservatives have sparred ahead of the fall election over the best way to deal with both China and India. The report specifically cites the growing role Canada’s Chinese and Indian communities are playing in all levels of government as a good thing and reflective of the increasing diversity of this country’s political system. However, it also warns of a risk of these communities being influenced — either knowingly or not — by foreign governments with their own agendas. The Canadian Press

Roll-out of a colour-coded label for new cars will begin on Friday. 1 July 2005 marks the start of the industry’s commitment, forged through the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP), to give consumers better information on key environmental factors like CO2 emissions. For the first time, SMMT has also forged a close partnership with a local authority to develop a pilot study for the label. Guildford Borough Council has been working with SMMT and LowCVP to encourage local dealers to display the label from today. Potential buyers will be surveyed to better understand the new label’s likely effect on current and future buying habits. ‘Average CO2 from new cars has come down by nearly ten per cent in the last seven years’, commented SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan, ‘But we know this is not enough. Today marks a radical step forward in terms of our commitment to give better information. The roll-out of the new label delivers a clear message – a low carbon choice means lower cost motoring.’ To start the roll-out, 24 dealers in Guildford will pilot the label following an official launch by transport minister, Dr Stephen Ladyman MP. The label will then be more widely displayed in UK showrooms, one for each car, in preparation for the key September market. To help consumer organisations like trading standards and Citizens Advice Bureau better understand the label, SMMT has produced an explanatory leaflet with the support of the Vehicle Certification Agency. This has already been distributed to more than 30,000 organisations. Better information is just one area where the industry is demonstrating its commitment to lower vehicle emissions. In terms of cleaner technologies, the market for alternative fuelled vehicles is growing, and the development of ground-breaking new technologies is being spearheaded through the work of SMMT Foresight Vehicle.Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window) Dr Ladyman added, ‘Consumers will now be in a better position to consider the environmental impacts of different cars and to make an informed decision on which one to choose.’ As well as CO2 ratings, the labels also show estimated annual running costs. These are based on the average fuel consumption over 12,000 miles and VED. The extra information available will, for the first time, put environmental concerns firmly on the agenda for new car buyers. Central to the label are the colour coded-CO2 bands, from red to green. These are similar in format to energy efficiency labels on white goods and follow the same CO2 emission bandings used by the government to levy road tax (VED).
When playing games like StarCraft 2 competitively, strategy is important, but that’s not all that separates good players from great ones. You need to implement that strategy at blazing fast speed (usually measured in actions per minute). More actions (some times in the range of 300/minute) means more things get done — more units built, spice collected (you know, if you’re playing Dune II), and more enemies destroyed. One tool designed to help serious players improve their gaming performance is the SRK StarCraft II Stick. The SRKS2S was custom built by Mauricio Romano when Shoryuken.com (SRK) put out a call for the “ultimate StarCraft 2 arcade stick”. What he wound up fabricating was what you see above: an arcade-style cabinet, with a stick on the right side, and 29 buttons. If you look closely you’ll see that the keys make up an abbreviated QWERTY keyboard with 19 letters, left Shift, left Ctrl, right Ctrl, space, and then the numbers 1-6. There is no enter/return key, so it won’t be great for chatting (the missing letters won’t help either). It uses high-quality Sanwa buttons (the same used in professionally-built fightsticks) and a USB connection.Because it uses USB your computer will think it’s just a normal keyboard/mouse combo. You won’t have to setup any macros or install any crazy drivers. It’s just a normal setup as far as your computer is concerned. The trackball-looking contraption is actually a modified Ultrastik — in other words it actually is a joystick that functions as a two-button mouse. It was designed to give gamers that authentic arcade feel while maintaining the accuracy and hand position of a mouse. The whole build process is explained in a lengthy, image-based post. It turns out that a trackball was the original plan (lots of arcade games used them!) but it didn’t work out. Upon reading you’ll see that this was no mere hobbyist project — some serious time and effort when into this thing, especially the frills, like lighting, decals, and paint. The video above shows the keyboard in action. It looks pretty slick, but the person using it… well he doesn’t seem too thrilled. Maybe the designer got too close to his work and only sees the flaws? Regardless, you can count us as impressed!via Shoryuken
Is WWE Losing Its Audience? Triple H and Stephanie McMahon preview AXXESSPaul “Triple H” Levesque and Stephanie McMahon did the following Facebook Live video on Thursday giving fans a walk-through of the WWE Fan AXXESS convention in Orlando that opens this evening during WrestleMania weekend.Heyman on RAW after ManiaIn continuing his week of blogs on Yahoo! Sports to promote WrestleMania 33, Paul Heyman has a new blog up on Thursday talking about the importance of this Monday’s RAW after WrestleMania, which in recent years has become just as big of a show as WrestleMania itself.“The psychology behind the scenes in scripting the Monday Night RAW after WrestleMania is always a fascinating attempt to balance ‘IF you missed last night, here’s what you missed (so check out the replays, available exclusively on the WWE Network)’ against ‘now here’s what’s coming up at our next big event.’ You can’t spend three hours just recapping WrestleMania, but ignoring what happened the night before potentially mitigates the historic value of the events that transpired during WWE’s annual showcase. And let’s not forget, shareholders never care about “yesterday,” they are only interested in this quarter exceeding expectations, let alone the revenue and profit margin (and number of subscribers) from same quarter, last year.”Recommended videosPowered by AnyClipMadison Square Garden Pays Tribute to Roman ReignsVideo Player is loading.Play VideoPauseUnmuteDuration 0:34/Current Time 0:03Loaded: 100.00%0:03Remaining Time -0:31 FullscreenUp NextThis is a modal window.Beginning of dialog window. $999 Preview • iPhone XS is the new $1,000 iPhone X See All Daisy is designed to pull apart iPhones that would cost too much to refurbish and are deemed end-of-life. It’s staffed by three to four people. James Martin/CNET Daisy is many things. It’s a 33-foot-long robot that pulls apart iPhones with its five arms. It was created by Apple. It’s a cacophony of servos, pressurized screw punches and other moving parts. It may also hold a key to electronic recycling’s future. This robot, announced last year, is at the center of a new Material Recovery Lab Apple’s built in Texas. The lab is designed to share Daisy’s technology and help advance e-recycling. Apple hopes the project will attract academics, recyclers and other companies to participate. “This is about the big hairy goal of making all our products from recycled materials,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives, in an interview. “It’s going to take a while, but it’ll also take tons of innovation.” While at the lab, we got to watch Daisy in action. Here’s what we saw:This is a traditional e-recycling machine, which smashes electronics in an effort to expose valuable materials and collect them. James Martin/CNET Unfortunately, these materials often get co-mingled and become impure in the process. James Martin/CNET Apple’s first recycling robot, Liam, was announced in 2016 and was designed to disassemble the iPhone 6. Liam processed phones every 12 minutes. James Martin/CNET An iPhone begins its journey through Daisy on the conveyer belt. James Martin/CNET In the first stop, Daisy jams a set of prongs into the crease between the phone’s screen and body, separating them. James Martin/CNET In the next section, the iPhone loses its battery and screws. James Martin/CNET How do you remove a battery glued onto the phone’s body? Blast the glue with freezing air and knock it with enough force. The battery just falls out. James Martin/CNET Then the screws that hold the logic board are punched out. Daisy identifies which phone it’s looking at and the angle at which it’s sitting to make sure it’s accurate. James Martin/CNET At the last stage, Daisy removes the cameras, haptics, speakers and other bits. Daisy’s left with an aluminum shell, which can be carted off to be recycled. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Two weeks after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath tweeted describing the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) as a green virus, Twitter withheld the tweet upon the direction of the Election Commission citing legal issues. This comes at a time when the Election Commission has banned Adityanath from campaigning for 72 hours for his derogatory and “highly provocative” statement. The tweets on Yogi Adityanath’s page have been deleted and in its place, there is a message reading, “This tweet from @myogiadityanath has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand.” The Uttar Pradesh CM had made these remarks a day after Rahul Gandhi, the Congress president, filed his nomination to contest in the Lok Sabha from the Wayanad constituency in Kerala. Adityanath took a shot at the IUML by calling it a “green virus” and dividing the country. According to The News Minute, Adityanath had tweeted, “The entire country had joined hands with Mangal Pandey against the English during the freedom struggle of 1857. Then the virus of the Muslim League came and spread, partitioning the country.”The party also released a statement which read, “The IUML was formed in Madras on March 10, 1948, after the tragic partition of India. The party is committed to the Constitution of India and the Constitutional principles of secularism, fraternity and the unity and integrity of the nation. The IUML has no role in the partition. Tuesday, November 14, 2017 Share Pearson Airport passenger count up 6.2%, says GTAA Posted by Travelweek Group Tags: Toronto, Toronto Pearson Airport, Trend Watch TORONTO — The Greater Toronto Airports Authority is reporting 2.1 million passengers in the first nine months of 2017, up 6.2% year-over-year.The GTAA, which operates Toronto Pearson International Airport, says this growth reflects increased capacity of aircraft and new routes, the economic strength of the Greater Toronto Region, and the role of Toronto Pearson International Airport as Canada’s largest airport and North America’s second busiest airport in terms of international passengers.“Toronto Pearson’s continued strong growth in the third quarter of 2017 is a reflection of Ontario’s economic vibrancy and the strong demand for air service across Canada,” said Howard Eng, President and CEO, GTAA. “Toronto Pearson was recently ranked as the fifth most connected airport in the world by industry data specialists OAG. This access to international markets helps to drive our economy and is a major factor in businesses’ decisions to headquarter in Ontario.”A total of 36 million passengers travelled through Toronto Pearson International Airport in the first nine months of 2017 as the international sector increased by 1.7 million passengers or 8% and the domestic sector increased by 439,000 passengers or 3.4% over the same period in 2016.More news: Honolulu authorities investigate arsons at 3 Waikiki hotels; no injuries reportedA total of 13.6 million passengers travelled through the airport during the three-month period ended Sept. 30, 2017 as the international sector increased by 414,000 passengers, or 5.3%, and the domestic sector increased by 166,000 passengers or 3.2% over the same period in 2016.Both the third quarter and first nine months of 2017 recorded the highest number of domestic and international passengers. The GTAA recorded net income of $56.3 million for the third quarter and $98.9 million for the first nine months of 2017, compared to $53.7 million and $80.7 million in the comparable 2016 periods, respectively, and continues towards reducing its deficit. For the three- and nine-month periods ended Sept. 30, 2017, the GTAA reported total revenues of $368.6 million and $1,029.1 million, representing increases of $17.5 million and $59.7 million from the same periods in 2016, respectively. << Previous PostNext Post >>

Source = e-Travel Blackboard: N.J With the possibility of a strike taking place this year, Qantas has commenced ‘plan B’ preparations sending managers into the US to train up ground handling staff. A Qantas spokesperson said sending managers to the US is something the airline has done over the past ten years during industrial disputes, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.”This type of contingency measure is important to ensure our passengers can continue to fly as normal in the event of union-led strikes,” the spokesperson said. ”We were forced to use this contingency in the past when the TWU took unprotected industrial action.”According to the source, the airline sent its managers to the US before Christmas to train up private contractors at Los Angeles Airport. A source undergoing the training described the course as “very hands-on”. ”You have to drive the trucks out to the aircraft and do the loading and unloading – and lining the trucks up to the aircraft doors and cargo doors.”The carrier has been in talks with Transport Workers Union over issues concerning aircraft engineers and up to 1700 long-haul pilots.

July 9, 2014 426 Views Share Citigroup is close to a deal with the Department of Justice to resolve allegations that the bank sold defective mortgage-backed securities in the lead up to the financial crisis, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal late Tuesday night.Citing people familiar with the matter, the report claims that the settlement negotiations are getting close to finalizing a settlement of $7 billion. Officials from Citigroup and the Justice Department both declined comment on the ongoing negotiations. The Journal reports that according to people familiar with the matter, the deal will include $4 billion in cash payments to the federal government, with the rest coming in the form of borrower relief. The negotiations had been stalled until Citigroup reportedly upped their cash offer from $1 billion recently. The deal would be the latest in a series of agreements between the government and major banks as the Justice Department seeks to apportion blame and repay the taxpayers for the part that the banks played in the events that caused the large scale economic downturn of the previous decade, a hole that the economy is still trying to dig out of to date. The agreement could also put more pressure on Bank of America to settle its own ongoing negotiations with the Justice Department. Talks between the two stalled last month. Last November, JPMorgan agreed to pay a record $13 billion. The government is said to be seeking more from Bank of America because the company issued more securities whose failure had a larger impact on the economy.According to the report, the government was initially seeking $10 billion from Citigroup, closer to the deal that it got in the JPMorgan settlement, arguing that, even though Citigroup issued fewer securities, the securities that it did offer performed much worse and had a greater detriment to the economy than securities offered by other banks.More settlements are likely to be forthcoming. in Daily Dose, Featured, Government, Headlines, News, Secondary Market Report: Citi, DoJ Nearing Securities Settlement Citigroup Justice Department Mortgage-Backed Securities Settlements 2014-07-09 Derek Templeton

It’s a challenging hike over steep, rocky terrain, but among the locals, it’s known as the most rewarding hike in the desert. Fly to Nairobi from £354 1. Aladdin: Wadi Rum Desert, Jordan – fly from £130 Fly to Jordan from £130 Releasedate: 19 July 2019 Find hotel dealsCheck-inCheck-outGuests12345678910Rooms12345Search hotels Not only was the original animated version 1992’s highest grossing film, but it opened up – sing it – A Whole New World – of fancy-dress possibilities for the 90s. Cut to kids everywhere screaming for Princess Jasmine makeovers. Now, it’s getting a modern-day, live animation makeover thanks to director Guy Richie. To bring it to life, the film crew took to the Wadi Rum Desert in Jordan and turned it into the fictional city of Agrabah. With burnt-orange sands, sweeping dunes and Martian-like mountains, it’s no surprise that this vast desert is often called the Valley of the Moon, or that it’s had a starring role in loads of movies. It was awarded its big break in Lawrence of Arabia back in 1962 and went on to become Planet Jedah in Star Wars: Rogue One. It’s recommended to visit on a day trip from Nairobi so wear your comfy shoes to explore. Make your way to Fischer’s Tower, the focal point of the park and a favourite among visitors for rock climbing. From Hell’s Gate and, in fact, anywhere in the local area, you’ll be able to see Mount Longonot in the neighbouring National Park. A dormant volcano that last erupted in the 1800s, it now dominates the landscape at 750 metres above sea level. If you fancy some more hiking, you can reach the rim of the crater in two hours for impressive views across the park. You’ll need to be relatively fit but it’s still suitable for a novice hiker, even though the pros use it as a pre-climb for Kilimanjaro. 2. Hell’s Gate National Park in Kenya, so named because of the intense geothermal activity taking place inside the park, provided the inspiration for the original film 25 years ago. A quarter of a century later, and the new live-animation movie is set to hit the screens in July, so it’s high time you visited the film set. True, the animals won’t burst into well-rehearsed song and dance in the voices of Beyonce and Donald Glover, and meerkats and warthogs probably don’t hang out together in reality – dreams crushed forever – but how many people can say they’ve been to Pride Rock? In fact, this park is less about the animals, and more about its unusual topography, with rock towers, volcanoes and deep canyons. From Princess Jasmine’s home town to the Joker’splayground, the settings on the big screen are, surprisingly, actual, real-lifelocations… with a little CGI thrown in for good measure. This year, theblockbusters are rolling in, so get off the sofa, step into the story and letthese film-set locations inspire your next adventure. Photo credit: David Clode 3. Whereto stay: Photo credit: Nicole Y-C Still get shivers thinking of Heath Ledger’s iconic portrayal of the Joker back in The Dark Knight? Us too. Now Joaquin Phoenix is taking up the mantel and embracing the heavy clown make-up. Gotham City may look a little grittier and more menacing on screen but the criminal mastermind is actually just roaming the streets of New York, specifically The Bronx. If you didn’t know, this neighbourhood is the home of ‘step streets’ – that’s streets made up of just steps, funnily enough – and the backdrop for an iconic scene in the trailer. Head to 167th Street, throw on your craziest smile and whisper, ‘Why so serious?’ to passers-by – it’ll be an Oscar-worthy performance for sure. Star Wars: Argyll, Scotland – fly from £50 Now, for the highly anticipated ninth and final episode, The Rise of Skywalker, you don’t need to jump to hyperspace to embrace your inner Jedi. It may not scream Tatooine or Coruscant vibes, but the Scottish Highlands are a favourite set location among the Rebel Alliance. The cast have been spotted filming in Argyll once more. Cue dramatic ‘staring-into-the-distance’ shots against the wild, impressive landscape. It’s the best place to spot some wildlife, like golden eagles, red deer and puffins. You’ll need four wheels to get around the area – we’re talking rural Scotland here – so hire a car and head to Argyll Forest Park to spot the rare red squirrel. Fun fact: the park’s dramatic scenery is thanks to the Highland Boundary Fault. It’s a major fault in the surface of the Earth which marks the line between Lowland and Highland Scotland.
