These stripped back, intimate shows will have a life-changing impact for thousands of vulnerable children.Duran Duran’s John Taylor says: “Thousands of children are innocent victims in the war zones of adult conflict around the world. They are often being denied education and other basic human rights. We are looking forward to performing an exclusive event in London this coming February, in support of War Child and the important work they do in the regions where these children are suffering.“This past year we have spent most of our time in the studio working on new songs, so we are very much looking forward to getting back onto a London stage for this special appearance.”Ben Knowles, War Child’s Director of Music says: “2014 saw more people displaced by war than any year since World War 2. It is a global emergency. These child refugees have no passports. They don’t get to choose where war sends them. The support of these bands and the generosity of music fans can send them hope.”

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is helping to alleviate the situation in Bihar state in north-eastern India, where 1.4 million people have been affected by severe flooding. So far, 33 deaths have been reported as a result of the breach in the eastern embankment of the Kosi River, straddling the India-Nepal border, and that figure is expected to rise. Water has engulfed hundreds of villages and destroyed more than 200,000 homes, and the displaced will not be able to return until the embankment is repaired.Meanwhile, some 55,000 Nepalese have been uprooted on the other side of the river, and UN agencies are mobilizing aid to assist the displaced.UNICEF said that roads have been damaged, while water and electricity have been disrupted. Because railway tracks have been submerged, food and other essential supplies are being transported by boat. The agency warned that camps housing the displaced could become overcrowded, increasing the likelihood of communicable diseases spreading. Further exacerbating the situation is the extreme heat, which is especially dangerous for children and pregnant women.Children “are most at risk from disease and suffer physical and mental distress from being moved from their homes to relief camps,” said Patrick McCormick, UNICEF Emergencies Communication Officer. The agency has carried out assessments in three of the hardest-hit districts, and has worked with the Government and other partners to deliver much-needed supplies.Cases of fever and diarrhoea are being reported in the temporary camps, where hygiene conditions are generally poor, with not enough toilets.“UNICEF focuses its response on delivering life-saving supplies like medicines, drinking water and sanitation equipment to ward off the threat of disease amongst the affected children,” Mr. McCormick said.

The G7 teleconference was being held as Spain’s banking crisis continued to cast a shadow over trading. The country’s banks are weighed by toxic loans following the implosion of the country’s real estate sector in the wake of the 2008 financial collapse. Those banks may force the country to seek a bailout. Spain, strapped for cash, might have to tap European Union rescue funds, but it is reluctant to do so because such aid would come with strict conditions.Spain has been forced to pay ever higher amounts of interest to attract buyers for its debt with the yield on the country’s 10-year bond up 0.02 of a point to 6.42 per cent. Spanish Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro said Tuesday said that, given current borrowing costs, financial markets had effectively shut out the country. He also claimed the amount of money needed to prop up Spain’s troubled banking sector is not excessively high but said the question was where the money would come from. And he repeated the country’s calls for the European Union to move faster towards establishing a banking union that would allow ailing lenders to seek help without governments intervening. Banca Santander S.A. chief Emilo Botin’s estimate that Spain’s banks would need C40 billion to shore up their defences.Canada’s finance minister, Jim Flaherty, has said European Union governments have significant resources and should be able to handle the eurozone’s problems without outside financial assistance from other countries. However, Flaherty said Monday that he was concerned about the European situation and said Ottawa was prepared to take measures to cushion Canada’s economy if the situation arises, much as it did during the 2008-9 recession.“One of the real issues that investors are wrestling with is that people have lost confidence in the ability of the Europeans to deal with the problem (of recapitalizing their banking system),” said Norman Raschkowan, North American strategist for Mackenzie Financial Corp., adding the problems in the banking sector don’t end at the Spanish border.“The Italian banks are stretched and the French banks are stretched. I think unfortunately the Europeans still haven’t come to that basic appreciation of how critical the capitalization of the banks is for confidence.”The energy sector was up 1.8 per cent as oil oscillated between slight gains and losses during the session. “It is necessary to beat the iron while it is hot,” Mr. de Mistura told reporters Thursday in Geneva, where he confirmed that a new round of intra-Syrian talks is set to run from 16 to 19 May. The idea is also to bring together the Syrian belligerents before the beginning of the month of Ramadan, which begins at the end of May. He said the new round “will be a rather business-like, rather short comparing to other meetings” and “with more intimate meetings in smaller rooms, in which we can look each other in the eyes.” The UN mediator admitted that under current conditions, “one can advance more with discussions of proximity than with a formal meeting with all the parties in the same room. Of course, we intend to find a time when we can return to this format,” he said. In any case, “the priority now is to consolidate a cessation of hostilities.” According to the Mr. de Mistura, the agreement reached in Astana is a step in the right direction as it pushes towards “a concrete de-escalation in four zones, in addition to the ceasefire.”He went on to say the UN is in discussions with Iran, Russia and Turkey over the control of safe areas in Syria. He recalled that the UN has “a lot of experience” in monitoring, referring to the implementation of the de-escalation zones. He added that it was important that de-escalation in the four zones be followed by much greater humanitarian access. In accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 on these inter-Syrian discussions, the parties will continue to negotiate on four issues, including governance (political transition), a new constitution, Elections and the fight against terrorism.
Imagine being able to shop at a winery or the LCBO while listening to classical music and savouring the aromas of chardonnay and pinot grigio, all without leaving your seat.A nearly $1-million funding grant will help Brock University’s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute establish the world’s first mediated-reality wine laboratory that will combine sights, smells and sounds to help researchers study the science of consumer choice in the wine industry.Brock’s oenology and viticulture researchers are on the forefront of this leading-edge technology thanks to a $960,000 grant from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) announced Thursday, Oct. 12.The Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Sensory Reality Consumer Laboratory, to be known as R3CL, will be able to create a variety of environments in which people purchase and consume wines. These environments could include wineries, liquor stores or even dining rooms. Interwoven with the scenes will be music, smells and other sensory information.Researchers will study how a range of factors impact the research participants’ choices of where and under what conditions they purchase and drink wines. This greater understanding of consumer behaviour will help the industry to best market their wines to potential customers, says CCOVI Director Debbie Inglis.“The concept of coupling consumer behaviour with technical tools of augmented and virtual reality is not only going to put Canadian researchers on the forefront of this research, but it’s also an international first,” she says. The exercise is not just academic but economic, explains Inglis, noting that the majority of wines sold in Canada come from other countries.“We want to flip that, or at least gain a majority of market share that’s Canadian,” she says.“This first-of-its-kind wine consumer laboratory will be an influential research platform to support and propel the Canadian grape and wine industry,” says CFI President and CEO Roseann O’Reilly Runte. “It will provide unique insight into wine consumer behaviour and be an asset for developing new, successful wines.”Runte believes it will also raise CCOVI’s reputation “as a global centre of wine research excellence.”In addition to acquiring the technology for the mediated-reality wine consumer lab, the grant will be used to purchase state-of-the-art equipment for several CCOVI research programs. For example, gas and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry machines will enable researchers to examine the impact of viticulture treatments that influence the colour, flavour and aroma of wine. This equipment will help researchers monitor changes to wine quality because of the impacts of climate change, one example being the cold hardiness of vines and choosing the right clone/rootstock combination for vine performance and wine quality tailored to our future climate. The enhanced chemical analysis from the new equipment will support CCOVI’s TanninAlert. The program tracks tannin levels — which impact bitterness and astringency in wine — and provide Ontario grape growers and winemakers with information on the ripeness of these flavours to help consistently create rich and robust Ontario red wines. Also being purchased are enhanced fermentation tanks, to be used in CCOVI’s research and teaching winery. Individually controlled for heating and cooling, the tanks allow researchers to determine ideal temperatures for different wine styles and impact during the wine-making process, as “temperature is a key factor that winemakers can control within the winery,” explains Inglis.“This CFI grant is an incredible opportunity to support Canadian research that allows us to be at the forefront of the research stage and have this international impact,” says Inglis.Brock University’s interim Vice-President, Research Joffre Mercier says the award “recognizes the outstanding research performed in our Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute, the only institute of its kind in Canada that links the vineyard to the wine and all the way through to the consumer choice.“The award also recognizes the outstanding economic impact of CCOVI’s work on the grape and wine industry in Ontario. I am very proud of the exceptional work of our researchers and of their dedication and commitment to our industrial and community partners,” Mercier says.CCOVI, an internationally recognized research institute on cool climate viticulture, oenology, wine business and wine culture, offers an array of programs and services to support the Canadian grape and wine industry. An economic impact study last year found CCOVI contributed more than $91 million and the equivalent of 307 jobs to Ontario’s economy in 2014-15.

The UN Security Council on Wednesday issued a statement calling on Myanmar to speed up efforts to have Rohingya refugees return safely to their homes, while omitting language in an earlier draft that referred to human rights violations. The statement came after Security Council members returned from a fact-finding mission to Myanmar and Bangladesh from 28 April to 1 May.The Security Council urged Myanmar to “step up its efforts to create conditions conducive to the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of Rohingya refugees and internally displaced persons to their homes in Rakhine State and to address the root causes of the crisis.”A previous draft written by Britain and backed by France and the United States had called for “transparent investigations into allegations of human rights abuses and violations,” but was rejected by China. Also Tuesday, four NGOs-Human Rights Watch (HRW), Amnesty International, Fortify Rights, and The Global Center for Responsibility to Protect-called on the world body to appeal to the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity committed in Burma.Myanmar has come under international scrutiny since a military campaign launched in August 2017 drove more than 700,000 Rohingya from their homes in northern Rakhine state.Myanmar has said the military operation in Rakhine is aimed at rooting out extremists and has rejected accusations from the United Nations, Britain, France and the United States of “ethnic cleansing.”

<< Previous PostNext Post >> Share Travelweek Group Posted by Airlines scramble to rebook flights in wake of Trump’s travel ban CAIRO — Airlines around the world are turning away passengers, refunding tickets and rebooking flights in the aftermath of President Donald Trump’s immigration order. The order signed Friday included a 90-day ban on travel to the U.S. by citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia or Yemen. It also suspended the U.S. refugee program for four months. That forced airlines to tell some customers they couldn’t proceed on flights to the U.S.Emirates said a small number of its passengers were affected Saturday, and it was helping them rebook. Delta Air Lines and British Airways both said they were offering refunds for passengers who couldn’t complete their trips.Several airlines, including Qatar Airways, posted travel alerts on their websites warning customers about the changes.Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has reiterated that Iran will no longer issue visas for Americans, describing the decision as a “counter-action” to Trump’s executive order. About five million tourists visit Iran each year, most of them coming from Iraq and other neighbouring countries. Europeans have also been coming to Iran, but Americans represent far less than 1% of the total – or about 50,000 – and are subjected to rigorous background checks. Iran’s ban will not be retroactive; all Americans with already valid Iranian visas “will be gladly welcomed” said Zarif.More news: Virgin Voyages de-activates Quebec accounts at FirstMates agent portalWorld leaders are denouncing Trump’s move and seeking more clarity on how citizens will be affected.Chancellor Angela Merkel said that “the fight against terrorism does not justify such general action against particular countries and people of a particular faith.” Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven called the move “counterproductive” and “totally unacceptable.”The two leaders were speaking at a press conference in Stockholm Tuesday. The size of the Group, present in several countries in the region, is what allows us to combine flexibility and connectivity to open promising new routes, make strategic changes throughout our network, and make real time adjustments in markets where demand has decreased,” said Cueto. Also, the Orlando to Sao Paulo route will operate TAM’s new Airbus A350 XWB starting in the second half of 2016 with seven flights per week instead of 11. In April of 2016 TAM will add another flight on the Miami to Fortaleza route for a total of two flights per week and will reduce weekly frequencies from five to four for the Miami to Manaus route. In February 2016, TAM will begin operating a nonstop flight from Sao Paulo to Bogota, increasing LATAM Airlines Group’s weekly frequencies for this route from seven to 11 and expanding easy connections to Caribbean destinations via Bogota. NEW YORK, N.Y. – High heels that are part of your feet. Matching bespoke beating hearts. Bioreactive necklaces and bioluminescent filaments that serve as a Medusa-esque back ornament.Enter the world of A. Human, a fictional brand on Mercer Street that serves as both commentary on the touchy nature of body modifications today and the external focus and force of the fashion industry. And, also, what it means to be, well, you.The immersive art show was thought up by Simon Huck, who enlisted Kim Kardashian West, Chrissy Teigen and some of his other famous friends to tease his Disney World for grown-ups that comes complete with a gift shop and an invitation to the public to walk through all month — for $40 a ticket. The idea is that A. Human, and its spring-summer 2019 collection from the future, can help you reimagine your body, but not in a Dr. Frankenstein way. These modifications, a mouthful of marble tooth inlays, for instance, or bony turquoise-colored barnacles at the shoulders (colour options available), are more about self-expression than vain alterations aimed at cultural acceptance.“How do you make body modifications not scary? That was our biggest challenge. How do you create a world where they can be stylish and inviting and not invoke that ‘ew’ feeling that you sometimes get when you look at body modifications? That was part of the ethos of A. Human,” explained Huck during a walk-through Tuesday, ahead of the official start of New York Fashion Week.“If you could as easily change your body as you change your clothing, would you? That’s the biggest question that we’re asking,” he said.Huck offers up his body changes instead of clothes. His team includes a specialist in transhumanism working alongside the guy who thought of Lady Gaga’s meat dress, Nicola Formichetti, among others. Huck started thinking it up about a year ago and went to work six months later. There are modifications for special occasions, nights out on the town or romantic gestures, such as the two hearts with identical infrastructure and housed in your body and that of your spouse or best friend. There’s the Carnaval for the party crowd, a set of transdermal blacklit implants that present as sculptured ridges by day but lit-up flares at the club. How about some pink living eyelashes that respond to music, lighting and mood, with growth patterns that can be adjusted at will? The Ursula includes bioreactive gemstones at the neck with culture keratin. It looks like sea treasure and can be customized.Kardashian West didn’t need much convincing when Huck told her of the project. She dreamed up an implanted necklace with LED technology that syncs with one’s heart.“It’s a very popular piece in our collection,” Huck deadpanned. “Kim knew within seconds, this is how I want it to look, this is how I want it to feel.”As for “biological heels,” they come in three varieties in Huck’s not-so-dystopian fashion world that merges science and architecture.“Part of A. Human is we wanted it to feel familiar,” Huck said. “We didn’t want it to be quintessential scary.”While his theories take on the future, way off or perhaps not too distant, some of his models were very much alive, showing off the pieces in clear boxes mounted on walls, only heads and shoulders showing, or in black installations, their bodies also mostly hidden in what is made to look like soil.In the planning process, Huck’s folly was serious.“How do you thought provoke in a world where everything is so headline filled? Especially the fashion world,” he said. “The No. 1 criteria for how we built these modifications is that they cannot be built on any existing insecurity or beauty norms or expectations that are in present-day society. They all had to be rooted in self-expression and curiosity.”Driving that idea is the notion that self-expression can be completely internal.“I think that challenges a lot,” Huck said, “especially when it comes to fashion expectations.”Huck’s guests enter to a kindly voice inviting them to enjoy the ride, with this question in mind: “I am myself and nobody else. Leave what it means to be you at the door.” Fashion art installation questions what it means to be you by Leanne Italie, The Associated Press Posted Sep 5, 2018 9:59 am PDT Last Updated Sep 5, 2018 at 10:40 am PDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email
New car importers warned on Friday that Cyprus risked becoming the dumping ground of old, polluting vehicles from abroad, as they backed a bill imposing higher road tax on used imports. In a statement, Semo said the situation has worsened in recent days after the government announced its intention to submit a bill to parliament that provides for a higher road tax on imported used vehicles according to their age and engine capacity. The bill was meant to come into force this year but reactions have caused delays.“A sharp rise in used car imports has been observed, most of which are old and highly polluting,” Semo said. The association warned that Cyprus risked becoming the dumping ground of ageing vehicles that other countries did not want.Semo said it supported the government bill because Cyprus deserved a modern, safe fleet of vehicles on its roads, taking advantage of the constant development of emission technologies that aim at protecting public health. The bill, which has been introduced by the government, is opposed by used car importers who argue that it was designed to help the new car dealerships. The changes will see a rise in the road tax of passenger vehicles with high CO2 emissions and a rise in the road tax of newly registered passenger vehicles and vans according to their age.According to the bill, road tax for those two vehicle categories will take into consideration the combined cycle CO2 emissions – euros per gramme per kilometre. For 120 gr/km the tax will €0.50 per gr/km, or €60; between 120 and 150, €3; 150 to 180, €6; over 180, €12.Annual road tax cannot exceed €1,500.On top of this, road tax charged on used vehicles imported after the law comes into force will also include additional charges based on their age.No charges will be imposed on used cars, petrol or diesel, up to one-year-old; between one and two, zero for petrol and €100 for diesel; two to three, €50 for petrol and €200 for diesel; three to four €100 and €300; four to five, €250 and €500; five to eight, €500 to €1,000; eight to 10, €750 and €1,500; over 10, €1,000 and €2,000.You May LikeCalifornia Earthquake AuthorityMake earthquake insurance a family priorityCalifornia Earthquake AuthorityUndoLivestlyChip And Joanna’s $18M Mansion Is Perfect, But It’s The Backyard Everyone Is Talking AboutLivestlyUndoSUVs | Search AdsThese SUVs Will Take Your Breath Away.
