Ní Riain, Anita Sweeney, Noel Scott, Lisa Fitzsimmons and Jacintha Edwards with facilitators Karen Duggan, Michaela McDaid and Aoife Valley.Loreto Community School in Milford are extending their teaching beyond the curriculum this week as staff and students investigate the building blocks of positive mental health.The corridors of the school are filled with a general feeling of goodwill and positivity as students are encouraged to press the pause button on their busy lives and take the time to examine the ingredients of positive mental health and happiness. Each morning the students of Loreto are given a class on a five building blocks of mental health…. give, connect, take notice, keep learning and be active.Accompanying these classes are various workshops that provide students with the necessary tools to work on improving their own positivity and mental health. Senior students have received a talk on “Time to Start Talking” presented by Karen Duggan from Jigsaw Letterkenny. Michaela McDaid from Salins Project has presented a workshop on “Provoking Thoughts” to all Junior Students. All the fifth year students of the school have been part of meditation sessions facilitated by Aoife Valley. Parents are encouraged to get involved in the school’s Positive Mental Health week. Each morning, parents receive a text on the lesson of the day and are asked to discuss this theme with their child at home. A Parents’ Talk has also been organised to highlight the key issues impacting on the mental health and well being of young people.In the midst of exam preparation, study and teenage pressures, Loreto CS is offering it’s students a valuable opportunity to examine their mental health and encouraging them to adopt attitudes and habits that could ensure a more positive outlook on life and overall greater happiness.
