Hon. Rayburn Blackmoore addressing members of the media this morning.Minister with responsibility for Public Works Honourable Rayburn Blackmoore reported to the media this morning during a site visit that there are presently fifty locals employed on the West Coast Road Rehabilitation Project. The West Coast Road Rehabilitation which is part of four pillar projects funded by the government of China began construction works last year on the Roseau to Portsmouth road network. The Minister says that while several persons are claiming that only Chinese nationals are employed on the project, there are fifty locals employed on the project.“A number of persons have criticized this project by saying that we are not employing locals, they were not seeing any locals on the project. Today you can see the black people under the cliff working, black people like us. To date we have fifty locals working on the West Coast Road Project itself,” Mr Blackmoore underscored.Mr Blackmoore further noted that this project is grant funded and in addition to the fifty locals who are employed on the project, the local sand and cement companies are also beneficiaries.“This is a grant funded project which implies that we the tax payers of this country are not going to be paying back anything in so far as this project is concerned. When we get fifty jobs and the procurement of the sand and cement that are being done locally; these are all add ons to the benefits that we are deriving from this very significant project.”In related news, the minister also noted that in criticism of the West Coast Project we are also criticism ourselves, and that these persons should not drive on the road. “When you criticize the West Coast Road and you say that the West Coast Road is a waste of time, it’s not good, you are also criticizing yourselves. All those who are saying that the West Coast Road is a waste of time; it’s not good my advice to them; take a boat and come to Roseau instead. Because if something is not good, it’s a waste of time why drive on it and smile? Take a boat, have a ferry service,” Mr. Blackmoore said.Mr Blackmoore also noted that despite the criticisms there are genuine Dominicans who are concerned about Dominica’s development and the benefactors are appreciative of the progress taking place on island.“But the genuine Dominicans who are concerned about Dominica’s development and the majority of Dominicans; those living in Dominica and overseas, residents in Dominica also you may not be a Dominican but you live in Dominica and our benefactors who have been with us in bad times and good times fully appreciate what is happening in Dominica right now,” he said.Dominica Vibes Newslast_img
